The Chamber has communicated some specific issues concerning taxation and the economy, with the concerned authority in the Central Government, who had asked us to suggest measures to alleviate any specific pain points felt by Trade & Industry stakeholders.
The Chamber has sent some specific issues concerning indirect taxation matters to Commissioner CGST- South, who had asked us to suggest measures to alleviate any specific pain points felt by Trade & Industry stakeholders, for forwarding the feedback to the Centre for a possible resolution.
The Chamber has sent letter to Excise Commissioner of West Bengal on 25th March, 2020 requesting the Government to please consider extension of time for completing the Annual Statutory Requirements in view of the spread of Coronavirus. The recommendation has received the Government's kind favourable consideration and extension has been made till 30th June 2020.
As per the request of The Hon'ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, The Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry volunteered to adopt three markets of South Kolkata - Gariahat, Jodhpur Park and Bansdroni for sanitization.
The Chamber coordinated with Councillor, Ward No. 93 (Jodhpur Park Market), Councillor, Ward No. 68 (Gariahat Market) along with the Lake Police and Gariahat Police Stations respectively for the above two markets and organized to provide the sanitization resources including masks, gloves, hand sanitizers and detergents.
Mr. B. B. Chatterjee, President, The Bengal Chamber and Mr. Subhodip Ghosh, Director General, The Bengal Chamber visited the Jodhpur Park Market on 14th April 2020 along with Officer-In-Charge Lake Police Station and the Local Councillor Ward No 93. 15 Litres sanitizers; 4 kg detergents, 400 pieces of reusable masks; 400 pairs of gloves for around 200 Stalls were handed over to Secretary, Jodhpur Bajar Samity in presence of the Local Councilor, Ward No. 93. Mr. S Radhakrishnan, Former President, The Bengal Chamber and a resident of Jodhpur Park area was also present.
On 15th April, 2020, President of Bengal Chamber Shri B B Chatterjee, Mr. Subhodip Ghosh, Director General and Mr. Smarajit Purkayastha, Deputy Director General, The Bengal Chamber visited the Gariahat Market along with Officer-In-Charge Gariahat Police Station and the Local Councillor Ward No 68. 20 Litres sanitizers; 6.5 kg detergents, 1500 pieces of reusable masks; 1000 pairs of gloves were handed over to Gariahat Bajar Samity In-Charge in presence of the Local Councillor, Ward No. 68.

The Bengal Chamber of Commerce & Industry has adopted Bansdroni Bazar, in addition to Gariahat and Jodhpur Park Market, for sanitization purpose to honour the request of The Hon'ble Chief Minister of West Bengal. On 23rd April, The Chamber representatives Mr. Deb A Mukherjee, President Designate, Mr. Subhodip Ghosh, Director General, and Mr. Smarajit Purkayastha, Deputy Director General handed over Thermal Gun, Gloves, Masks and Sanitizers to the Chairperson of the Bansdroni Bazar Committee in the presence of Borough Chairman Mr. Tapan Dasgupta, and Mr. Subhash Adhikari, Officer In-charge, Netaji Nagar Police Station.
As per the Bazar Committee there are around 70 shop owners and vendors who are selling daily essentials and are vulnerable and exposed to the pandemic. The Chamber is providing Thermal Gun, Hand Gloves, Masks, and Hand Sanitizers, as per their requirement to maintain hygiene. Mr. Tapan Dasgupta, Borough Chairman thanked The Bengal Chamber for their support as it would have been difficult for the shopkeepers to procure these supplies in this hour of need.
Mr. Deb A Mukherjee, President Designate, The Bengal Chamber, mentioned, 'as a responsible Chamber of Commerce, we consider community engagement as an integral part of our Chamber's activities. In partnership with The State Government we are doing our bit to help fight this epic pandemic. Be it adopting markets or helping Medical/ Educational establishment to carry out their uninterrupted service the Chamber is trying its best to bridge the gap.'
Mr. Subhodip Ghosh, Director General, The Bengal Chamber said, "we will continue our support to the Bazar committees and will provide supplies to them whenever needed." He mentioned, the Chamber will again provide hand Sanitizers and thermal gun to Gariahat Market as per the requirement from the Police Authorities.
The Chamber connected with The Sourav Ganguly Foundation for their contribution of 250 kgs of rice to The Burra Bazar Kolkata Pragatashil Hawkers Union who got in touch with The Chamber for assistance.
