The Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry in association
with The Telegraph organised the Launch Undaunted - Saving the Idea of India written by Former
Finance Minister Shri P. Chidambaram, on 14th March, 2019 at the Williamson Magor Hall, Bengal
Chamber.
Mr. Subhodip Ghosh, Director General, The Bengal Chamber in his introductory address extended a
heart-warming welcome to Shri P. Chidambaram, who, besides being a current Member of Parliament, is
also an alumnus of Harvard, an erudite columnist, and also a Former Finance Minister. Mr Ghosh
termed Chidambaram's latest book Undaunted as a 'contemporary record of the most important events
that affected the country'.
Mr. Indrajit Sen, President, The Bengal Chamber and Mr. Dhruba Mukherjee, Vice President, ABP took
the occasion to present the mementoes to Shri Chidambaram. Mr. Sen in his welcome address reminded
us of Chidambaram's budget of 1997 which is still remembered as the dream budget for the Indian
economy and regarded him as a stalwart in Indian politics and one of the architects of India's
first generation of economic reforms.
Mr. Sundanda K. Datta Ray on being invited to moderate the interactive session took the session
further. Chidambaram speaking about what drives him to write said, "I write because I am concerned
what people leave behind." He stressed that the nation today is plagued by fear. A successful
nation, he said must be fearless as he aptly quoted Rabindranath Tagore's Where the mind is without
fear in his support.The evening unfolded a Keynote Speech by Shri Chidambaram followed by his
discussion with Mr. Datta Ray and then interactive session
with the audience. The topics which emerged, ranged from
the country's internal vulnerabilities, issues on Jammu and Kashmir, global economy and India's
economic reforms like introduction of GST and demonetization, vulnerabilities of agri-economy, the
country's uniqueness as a multi-cultural and multilingual nation and many other interesting
insights.
The programme featured the Kolkata Launch of the Book. An engaging interaction finally concluded
with Vote of Thanks from Mr. Subhodip Ghosh, Director General, The Bengal Chamber
Shri Chidambaram signed many books, on request from the
audience, at the side-lines of the programme.
