BCC&I Think lecture and book launch "When Coal Turned Gold" authored by Shri Partha S Bhattacharyya, Former Chairman, Coal India, 18th April, 2019, Chamber Premises.

BCC&I has organised another thought provoking Think Session- Talk and Chat Show on 18th April, 2019 on the book titled "When Coal Turned Gold" authored by Shri Partha S Bhattacharyya, Former Chairman, Coal India. Other Panellists were Shri A K Jha, Chairman, Coal India and Former Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha, PVSM, AVSM, VM, ADC. The Session was moderated by Shri Tamal Bandyopdhyay, Consulting Editor, Business Standard.

'When Coal Tuned Gold' traces Coal India's journey over four decades, documenting the transformation of a company from a loss-making enterprise to a profitable Maharatna.

Having joined as a management trainee at the age of 26, Mr. Bhattacharya has seen the exciting transformation journey of CIL and in the book which carries the foreword, by none other than the former president Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, he provides a firsthand account of what caused such a phenomenon transformation. During his tenure as the Chairman of Coal India Ltd from Oct 2006 to Feb 2011, Coal India secured Miniratna in 2007, Navratna in 2008 & finally the Maharatna status in 2011 - the fastest ascendency by any PSU so far. In 2010, Mr. Bhattacharyya spearheaded the Coal India IPO to a runaway success. The 3.5 bn US$ IPO attracted over 54 bn US$ in subscription making it the largest Indian IPO so far & one the top 3 IPOs globally in 2010. Prior to this Mr. Bhattacharyya was CMD of BCCL - a perennially sick CIL subsidiary then. The company turned profitable during his tenure & has not looked back since then. The discussion was really enriched and insightful especially on coal mining in India.
