Visva-Bharati, Rural Extension Centre is working in 50 villages of Bolpur- Sriniketan and Illambazar Blocks on various multidisciplinary developmental aspects starting from agriculture, education, health, mental and physical development of Human resources and many other important issues concerning village people life and their environment. The present venture of Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCC&I) for agricultural development of the field villages is a result of long discussion and association with the villagers between Visva-Bharati, Rural Extension Centre and BCC&I. The issues of agriculture and the marketing of the products was discussed in the meeting with agriculturist and the Secretaries of the Village Development Societies (Palli Unnayan Samities) long back on 12th January 2016 at Ramnagar village where The Project Director, Sufal Bangla was present to give Keynote address to the participants. The journey started, after that meeting and Rural Extension Centre came in close association with BCC&I, Kolkata. Subsequently, BCC&I, Kolkata organized and arranged 2 days training programme on Vermi-compost at Ramakrishna Mission, Narendrapur, Kolkata involving 30 farmers of 8 selected villages. After taking requisite knowledge in the training the farmers came back and started practical work in their respective villages. Till now, 06 vermi-compost pits were constructed in three (03) villages. Out of which, Rural Extension Centre of Visva-Bharati along with Mr. Satayabrata Mukherjee, Chairman, Agriculture & Rural Development Section of BCC& I visited two villages on 4th September 2016 to observe the initiative taken by the farmer to construct the pits. Lakrhinarayan Sen of Senkapur village is a progressive farmer and very enthusiastic and construct a vermin-compost pit in his household courtyard. He is also using water hyacinth as raw materials for preparing the compost. Ranjit Bala of Kankutia village is an energetic youth and wants to prepare vermin compost for business purpose. He has also constructed a vermin compost pit in his household. This visit was a fruitful one. Many farmers joined this programme and Rural Extension Centre, Visva-Bharati is expecting that more farmers will come ahead to carry forward this initiative for their betterment as well as betterment for the community.
