- Seminar on Excellence in Best Practices of MSMEs, 9th January 2015, Chamber premises
The MSME Development and Manufacturing Committee of BCC&I organized the seventh edition of the annual MSME Excellence Award titled “Seminar on Excellence in Best Practices of MSMEs” with the participation of senior representatives from the Government and Industry along with the Academia on Friday, 9th January 2015 from 10.00 a.m. onwards at the Williamson Magor Hall, BCC&I.
The focus of the event was to create a benchmark for the MSMEs by giving them exposure to the best manufacturing and services sector practices adopted and implemented by their peers/counterparts so that they could learn, adopt and implement these practices in their respective organizations, which would help them to achieve better productivity as well as quality at lesser cost.
This is an annual event of BCC&I and it is being organized to reward the MSMEs for their “Excellence in Best Practices” in pite of the severe logistical and infrastructural constraints they come across. The focus is also to give exposure to the MSMEs and extend them the opportunity of networking with the large corporates. The event helps the large scale industries to contribute in their continuous endeavour in developing or upgrading their vendor base by inducting quality vendors for furthering growth and development of their businesses.
This year, our award programme was presided over by Dr. Alok Roy, President, BCC&I, who commenced the session by giving a Welcome Speech. Mr. P Roy, Director General, BCC&I was the Master of Ceremonies for the Inaugural Session.

Shri Kalraj Mishra spoke about the special emphasis given to the MSME sector since this is a most important segment for the development and growth of industry post globalization. The Minister observed that the small scale industries play a pivotal role for further industrialization and they are driven by technology, integrated business networks, cluster initiatives, etc. and based on these observations, the Hon’ble Minister observed that the Ministry of MSME is taking a slew of measures to boost the MSME sector and to imbibe in them the concept of business globalization which may help them to create a significant place for themselves in the global business scenario.
The Minister also spoke about the initiatives taken by the Central Government under the wings of the Ministry of MSME, Government of India to form MSME Clusters in different parts of India with special emphasis on West Bengal. He said that there are different places in West Bengal like Kolkata, Howrah, East and West Midnapore, Purulia, Burdwan, Birbhum, etc where the Central Government with the help of the State Government is planning to set up MSME Hubs for furthering development and growth of the MSME sector, which in turn would catalyze the progress of Industry and indeed the Economy.
Besides, the Minister spoke about the definition of MSMEs and he observed that the said definition is proposed for revision in the MSMED Act 2006 and also that a clause is proposed to enter in the said Act which would look after the revival or exit of MSME sick units.
Shri Amarendra Sinha, IAS echoed the voice of the Minister and he observed that MSMEs are nowadays considered not only an important segment of the Indian Economy but a very crucial sector so far as global industrialization is concerned. It is the MSMEs, which would lead our country towards the path of globalization by creating business links between the global players and our indigenous players. Besides, the Special Secretary felt that MSMEs generally prioritize more on labour intensive technologies than capital intensive ones and this leads to more job creation. He also spoke about the MSME policy which comprises of different schemes, projects, etc available for the MSME units and which would contribute greatly towards helping the MSMEs stay on the growth path.
The panel of judges who evaluated the presentations of the participating MSMEs was headed by Mr. Aloke Mookherjea (Chief Judge) and Past President, BCC&I and Chairman, Howden Solyvent (India) Private Limited; Mr. Debkumar Basu, Director, ZETADEL Technologies P. Ltd.; Dr. Anjan Ghosh, Former Vice President, Total Quality Management, Exide Industries Limited; Mr. P N Gupta, Consultant – Industrial Engineering and Productivity, Tata Steel Processing and Distribution Limited and Dr. Suman K Mukerjee (Judge & Valedictory Speaker), Principal & Dean, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Institute of Mgmt Science Kolkata Kendra.
The judges selected the three best case study presentations in Manufacturing Sector and one best case study presentation in Services Sector out of a series of presentations made by the participating MSMEs. Following were the MSMEs which won the Award along with the Certificate of Best Case Study Presentation.

The award programme was attended by well over 150 delegates from industry representing sectors like manufacturing, engineering, petrochemicals, chemicals, financial institutions, bankers and others. The feedback from the session was extremely positive as it was an excellent learning experience and networking forum.
