Workshop on Sexual Harassment on Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act 2013, 4th March, 2014, Chamber premises
The inaugural session commenced with the Welcome Address by the Director General, Mr. P. Roy and thereafter Justice Chittatosh Mukherjee in his keynote address explained the law and also the legal position and responsibility of employers. Justice Mukherjee shared his overall impression on the Act. Mr. Somesh Dasgupta, Chairperson, HR / IR Committee delivered the vote of thanks.
In the first technical session Prof. Jaba Guha and Prof. Saswti Ghosh explained the background of the Act. They spoke about generally perceived ideas, general impact and financial impact on the industry. The presentations were followed by an interactive session. Thereafter Mr. Manabendra Mondal Executive Director, Socio Legal Aid Research and Training Centre explained the law in details such as defining sexual harassment, prevention, constitution of internal complaints committee, constitution of local complaints committee, complaint of sexual harassment , conciliation, inquiry into complaint including action during pendency of inquiry, inquiry report, punishment for false or malicious complaint and false evidence, determination of compensation, prohibition of publication of contents of complaint and inquiry proceedings and penalty thereof, duties of employer, duties of district officer, employer to include information in annual report, power of the Government to call for information and inspection of records, penalty for non compliance with provision of Act and cognizance of offence by courts. In the post lunch session, Prof Ushri Banerjee, Associate Professor, Dept. of Applied Psychology, Calcutta University explained in details the need for counseling of the victim in cases of sexual harassment to overcome the trauma and medical Help.
In the last session, Justice Moloy Sengupta, Former Chief Justice Sikkim High Court, Mr. Manabendra Mandal, Advocate, Executive Director, Socio Legal Aid Research & Training Centre and Ms. Debashree Chatterjee, Assistant Commissioner, Kolkata Police participated in the question and answer session on implementation of Act by the employer.
