The Health Committee of The Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry organized a Medico Legal Workshop on 14th March 2014 at The Palladian Lounge. Mr. S. Coari, Ex-Judicial Member of State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission was the Chairperson of the panel discussion. The panelists were Prof. Bhabotosh Biswas, Professor & HOD - Cardiothoracic Vascular Surgery, R G Kar Medical College & Hospital; Mr. Bipin Mukherjee, President, Kolkata Consumer Forum Unit II; Mr. Prabir Basu, Advocate & Ex-Additional Standing Council (Central Govt.) Member, State Consumer Protection Council, Government of West Bengal; Dr. P. K. Nemani, Member, West Bengal Medical Council; Mr. P.L. Mehta, Director, Neotia Healthcare Initiative Limited; Mr. Brotindro Mullick and Mr. Avik Das, Medico Legal Consultants from Medical Defence Consultancy India Pvt. Ltd (Medeco). The workshop was attended by more than 100 delegates from the leading healthcare units of Kolkata and also included eminent doctors and legal consultants. Prof. Bhabotosh Biswas alerted the medical fraternity to record their services in order to provide clear-cut facilities given to the patient, as medical service is a bilateral responsibility. Mr. Brotindro Mullick, Medico Legal Consultant, informed participants about the various precautionary measures the doctors should keep in mind to avoid legal defamation. With medico legal issues now of great concern in our society, the Chamber had organized the Workshop to learn and share the experiences on medico legal issues & guidelines.
