• Interaction on “India-Sri Lanka Relations: Opportunities for Both Countries” with His Excellency Prasad Keriyawasam, High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in New Delhi, 17th September 2013, Chamber premises

An Interactive Session with H.E. Mr. Prasad Keriyawasam, High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in New Delhi was organized on “India-Sri Lanka Relations: Opportunities for Both Countries” on 17th September 2013 at 7.00 p.m. at the Chamber.

The High Commissioner recalled the historic relationship existed between the then Calcutta and Colombo. After the capital shifted to Delhi and Mumbai emerged as the financial capital of the country, Sri Lanka’s focus also shifted. However, recently, Government of Sri Lanka is emphasizing on reviving the relationship. A diplomatic Consulate’s office is also in the pipeline.

The High Commissioner mentioned that an integrated approach is needed in business relationships between the two countries. Sri Lanka will open free market for India for every commodity sooner or later except for agro products. He expressed keen interest in Joint Venture initiatives both at Government and Private levels.

Buddhist Tourism got a special mention in the discussions. BCC&I mentioned that they would get in touch with relevant authorities for setting up railway and air connectivity between Colombo, Kolkata and Gaya to develop Buddhist Tourism. The Chamber would also get in touch with Indian Museum in Kolkata for an appropriate positioning of the Relics of Lord Buddha in the Museum.
